Let me tell you a story...

Last week, I was taking a slow Sunday afternoon ride with my girlfriend, Desiree. The Florida sun shown warm and a gentle breeze blew through the trees around us. We pedaled in silence, on our mountain bikes, and basked in the glory of life. I decided it was time to open up to her, to tell her how I really felt about us. I also decided to let her know that I had discovered mankind's reason for existence AND how to attain Nirvana. And so I began...I revealed my innermost secrets and thoughts to her. As I spoke, the words flowed from me like a river. When I was finished, I turned to her warily to see her reaction. Unfortunately, she wasn't there. Desiree had fallen off her bike about a mile back and was limping home, cursing my name for leaving her.

This never would have happened if we'd been on a tandem bicycle.

Tandem bicycles have been steadily gaining in popularity since the 1980s. They've been around all along but it seems like people are finally starting to
discover how fun they can be. Tandems have a wide variety of uses including:

- A parent and child can ride without the parent worrying about the child's safety
- Friends can ride and talk to each other without colliding
- A couple can take a nice romantic ride together
- Any duo of different pedaling strength can stay together (see above story)

And really you don't look as silly as you think you might on one of these. The first time I hopped on one I half expected people to shout "Hey, look at the circus freaks!" or something. It didn't happen, though, and it was actually pretty fun.
