Did you know:
Folding bicycles have been around for about a century. They're not futuristic inventions like some people (me) think.
"What the heck is a folding bicycle?"
Brooks Slaughter
I didn't believe there was such
a thing. But once I accepted the fact that I didn't know everything about
bicycles, I moved on...
Okay let's umm, break down, the folding bike. They're are a commuter's/traveler's dream. Here's why:
- They break down to 1/3 the size of their already small frame
- You can get them onto places like a plane or public transportation quickly
and inexpensively
- They take as little as ONE MINUTE to take apart
These things are
great, but
you don't want to go touring on one.
Small wheels that make them easy to store also make them less efficient to ride
than a regular bike. (you're gonna work harder) These same small wheels (some are only 12" in diameter) mean
less suspension and more friction. (less comfortable
and rims overheat over time)
These problems aren't paramount as long as your commute isn't too long.
Recently, full size wheels have become available that eliminate these problems.
You're ride will be smoother but the bike itself won't be as compact.
There are two ways a
folder
can be broken down for storage:
1. Folding - These bikes utilize levers and hinges. They can be folded
very quickly.
2. Disassembling - They require tools and up to thirty minutes to take
apart, but are stronger bikes.
Some offer both options. In these cases, disassembling makes it even more
compact than folding.
Basically, a great folding bicycle will have a good balance of three things.
1. Size - Obviously, it should
fit you.
2. Ease of collapsing - You may cringe at the thought of touching a tool.
3. Riding efficiency - You don't want to be worn out after a mile. Ride it
first, or select one with a good reputation.
Folders open up many new possibilites for its rider.
Get ready for a whole new world!
