Do you hate to sweat? Don't worry,
electric bicycles are here!
Let's shine some light on electric
bicycles.
"We gonna rock down to Electric Avenue And
then we'll take it higher" EddieGrant-Electric
Avenue
Most of us have heard about electric
vehicles of some sort. And a few luckyones have actually seen cool
little three or four wheeled cars cruising thestreets, powered by
electricity.
The technology has, however, remained adistant
future despite optimism about its benefits. But before you get
upsetand leave your computer in tears, let me give you some good
news!
Electric bicycles are here in a big
way.
Now you may say: "But I've never even seen
one!" Believe me, you'll be seeingmore and more of these; and if you
live in a big city you may already. Overseas, where road congestion
has already reached a critical point, electricbicycles are a common
site. (Think of those crowded streets in China.)
Way back in
1997, there were about 340 million cars in the world. Guess how many
bicycleswere being ridden...1.4 BILLION.
Now that you've
shouted at me about never seeing one, you might be saying: "How the
heckdo electric bicycles (or e-bikes) work!?"
Such
abuse...but I'm here to serve.
How
e-bikeswork
An e-bike is basically a
regular bicycle with a battery-powered electric motoradded to it.
They can chug along at a good 10 mph without any help from you,but
will increase to 15-20 mph with a little pedaling. This is the
beauty ofan electric bike. You can still get good exercise and not
kill yourself onhills and such. Power is activated by either a
switch on the handlebar or inresponse to pedaling. To stop, simply
flip the switch or stop pedaling. Youcan then use the hand brakes to
stop as you would a normal bicycle.
Here's what got me
excited about owning one of these.
You can adapt anybike
you own to electric power! Affordable kits are now sold that will
work onany bike. You can install it yourself, or for a small fee
have a bicycle shopdo it for you. Many e-bikes are built from the
ground up, and have coolfeatures like tail lights. Batteries are
cheap to recharge, and take around 8hours to charge, less if you use
a quick charger.
