BMX Bikes Take Me Back...Way Back

bmx bikes

Did you ever wonder where BMX bikes came from, or why they're so darn popular? Let's go back in time...

Do you guys remember the Nintendo game Excitebike? What a great game. Pushing your dirtbike to the limit, conquering jump after jump, and sprayingmud in your opponent's face as you race across the finish line!

Or how about Elliot using his BMX in "E.T." to escape the evil evilgovernment men? Those guys never stood a chance against an 11 year old on aBMX...

Why did I just take a trip down memory lane? Because BMX bicycles(bicycle moto-cross) have their root in moto-cross motorcycle racing. In the 1970s, young fans in Long Beach were tired of watching the grown-ups have allthe fun on the dirt tracks.

One enterprising 13 year old decided to do something about it.

Scott Breithaupt set up a dirt track and charged admission. The sport rapidly gained momentum and soon the first BMX bicycle was introduced by Yamaha.

What makes it a BMX?

Here's your typical spec:

- knobby tires, with wheels that typically measure 20 to 24 inches.
- straight forks
- high bottom bracket
- padded handlebar and top tube
- a single speed

BMX bicycles have always been the ride of choice for kids of all ages. Lately, however, many young adults are riding them. Surfers, skaters, and many others like the old school style the right BMX bike radiates.

HOWEVER, if you find yourself running from corporate thugs bent on your destruction, remember:

BMX BIKES CANNOT FLY.
