The true bicycler uses bicycle art to expand
mind and body.
Zen master K. Larner once said:
"Bicycle art allows the union of the physical and
spiritual, allowing us to attain heights previously thought
unreachable."
Bicycle and art may not be two words most
bikers put together readily. And there's no shame in
that!
But there's more to bicycling than muddy trails, lazy
sunsets, and mad dashes for the finish line. There's a huge array of
cool stuff out there that you NEED to know about. Whether you're
looking to decorate a house or apartment or give a gift, bicycle art
knows no bounds...
There are many different types of bike art. From common to
uncommon here's the big ones:
Bicycle Posters are the cheapest of the arts.
They are printed on the thinnest weight paper and generally have
average color reproduction.
Bicycle
Prints are a significant step up in quality and price. A
heavier weight paper means finer color reproduction. Prints are the
way to go for true color reproduction of original bicycle
art.
Vintage Bicycle Posters are very popular and in
this case refers to early 20th Century prints. (not wine)
Bicycle Clipart needs no explanation but what
the heck. It's pre-made electronic images of bicycles that come in a
wide array of file types (jpg, giff) and an even wider variety of
illustration styles. (photo, cartoon)
Bicycle Wallpaper isn't what your two year old
cousin has plastered up in his bedroom. No this is computer
wallpaper. It's the lovely pictures of bikes that you want to see on
your PC or Mac desktop when you start up.
NOT SO COMMON:
Bicycle Paintings are the cream of the crop in
the bicycle art world. Aside from an ice sculpture, nothing says: "I
seriously LOVE bicycles" more than original artwork.
ADIRONDACK BICYLE ART
During a recent excursion to Maryland, I ran into a
fellow named Dan Hinkley. After I picked him up off the ground, I
found out he is an avid painter and specializes in transferring
photographs you give him into beautiful artwork. He runs a site
called Hinkley's Sitting
Pretty . The interesting thing is he paints them onto
adirondack chairs. Yeah, I'd never heard of it,
either.
There's an awesome Margaritaville chair on his
homepage. Turns out he's something of a celebrity in his area. I
wish someone would write an article
about me.
Adirondacks came about in 1903 and are made from wood
and characterized by wide armrests and slanted backs. They're
steadily gaining popularity due to the fact that one can serve food
and beverages comfortably outside without needing a table. Tables
are overrated anyway.
Here's the chair I just had painted from the
biking photo you see. Dan's painting is actually better than the
photo! This guy is great to work with. Highly recommended! Check out
more of his beautiful artwork at Hinkley's Sitting
Pretty.
